What is the best time of day for family photos?

This is a question that comes up all the time for families trying to pick the best time for their photo session. In the middle of the day the sun is high in the sky and it casts harsh shadows. 

The best time of day is about an hour before sunset.

We call this the golden hour. Almost every session I photograph is during this time, including this one. You can see how beautiful the light is!

But in the summer, golden hour is VERY late around here and my kids go to bed early.

It can be challenging for little ones to start a session at 7pm or even 7:30 (in Vancouver the sun goes down around 9pm during much of the summer) but I have found that our sessions are full of movement and snuggles and with the right preparation, they will be okay! A late nap can help young ones and a little snack during the session might also help keep their energy up.

If a golden hour session won't work for your family, then a morning session is the next best option.
