After choosing your photographer, deciding on what to wear and where to go are the two biggest decisions you'll make. 

Here are some tips to help you decide on the best location for you and your family. 

• My girls always have fun when I take them down by the river. You'll see them in a photo below! They like throwing rocks in the river, dipping their toes in the water and playing in the sand. The river might be a good location for family photos for us because it is a place that brings my girls joy.  What type of locations bring your family joy?
• On the other hand, I personally love the look of tall grass and I've seen LOTS of kids run through it with no fear, but my girls hate the feeling of the scratchy grass and they are afraid of what might be hiding in it. An open field might not be the place for us. Kids who are allergic to bees shouldn't be photographed in a garden. Are there locations that might make the session challenging for your family for some reason?
• In the fall, parks with colorful trees are beautiful options. In spring and early summer, fields have beautiful tall grass blooming trees. Consider the season when choosing your location.

Here are the different types of locations available for your photo session:

FIELD

I have several fields I shoot in, depending on the time of year. A couple of them have a garden near by and one even has a water nearby. If you choose field as your location, we'll decide together which one is the best option, depending on the time of year and time of the session, based on the light.

RIVER/BEACH

Like the fields, these locations have variety as well, including trees and sometimes a field. These can be fun locations for a playful session.

MOUNTAIN (about 50 min outside of Vancouver)

I absolutely adore this location and I only take a few families here each year because it is a long trip. It can be quite windy but if you are up for the adventure, the views are absolutely gorgeous. It's an easy walk with a variety of "looks." We like to walk and pick black berries in late summer. And I suppose technically you aren't "on a mountain" or "in the mountains" but it's a much more mountain feel than anything we get in Vancouver!

PARK WITH TREES

Of course there are just beautiful trees all around us and if that's what you're looking for, we can definitely find them! I have several parks or park-like locations that I photograph regularly with beautiful trees, especially in the fall.

URBAN

Okay, as urban as it gets in downtown Vancouver. I actually haven't photographed many families in an "urban" setting recently but tend to do more Senior sessions this way. It is a possibility if you are comfortable having children near roads or up on parking garages (I have a favorite little spot!). Seniors often do a couple this way and then head to a nearby field to finish out their session.
