It's not really complicated actually. For me, it's a very natural form of posing with a little bit of documentation mixed it. The whole purpose is to look back and remember the moment and see your loved ones' personalities and relationships to each other, not some image of perfection.
Most families at least want one "smile at the camera shot" and we definitely will do that. But most of our time, you won't look at me! You'll look at each other and talk to each other and smile at each other. You'll play silly games to help you relax and bring out a laugh and a natural smile. The majority of the session is heavily directed and only maybe once or twice will you hear me say, "Look at me and smile!"
My goal is to keep shooting during transitions and to have a little time at the end for you to just be together in our location in whatever way feels most natural to you and I will follow you around and capture it. It might be tossing rocks in the river or picking dandelions, tossing baby in the air or swinging kids between parents. You be you and I'l step back and photograph your connections!
The most important thing is to not put pressure on them ahead of time. Trust me to connect with them and help them relax during our time. During our session, trust me to guide and direct everyone while you just relax and enjoy being together. When you look back at your photos, I hope you'll remember your connections, not all the time you spent fighting with your kiddos to get that perfect photo.
